B&G Christmas Plates (classic)

This Year's Christmas Plate from Bing & Groendahl

Since 1895, Bing & Groendahl has created a tradition with their iconic blue and white Christmas plates in underglaze, which are only available during the year of their release.

Each Christmas plate from Bing & Groendahl tells its own unique story, capturing a moment filled with the spirit of Christmas. The motifs range from snowy landscapes and farmhouses to Christmas trees, angels, elves, and other scenes reflecting Danish culture, nature, and history. Every detail is meticulously painted to create an authentic and aesthetic expression.

Many of the plates also depict Danish churches, which are traditional gathering places for families on Christmas Eve. Although church attendance is less common today than in the past, many still choose to start their Christmas Eve here, surrounded by hymns and the beautiful tones of organ music, bringing peace and solemnity to the celebration.

Christmas is about togetherness and care, and during this time, we also remember to treat animals well. Several plates depict both wild animals and pets enjoying the extra attention and care that characterize the holiday season.

Bing & Groendahl's Christmas plates remain a cherished tradition, released each year alongside Royal Copenhagen's Blue Collectibles collection, making them timeless collector's items.

A Little History of the Beautiful Old Christmas Plates

Bing & Groendahl revolutionized the Christmas tradition in 1895 by producing the world's first Christmas plate. Today, their Christmas plates are globally recognized and cherished as an important representation of Denmark. The motifs reflect proud Danish landmarks, nature, and culture, making them highly sought-after collector's items. The idea of the annual Christmas plate came from Harald Bing, one of the founders of Bing & Groendahl. His vision of creating a new plate each year featuring Danish themes like nature and architecture made Christmas plates iconic.

Personal Collection: Create a Story with Your Theme

Christmas plates and figurines from Bing & Groendahl offer a unique opportunity to create personal themes that tell stories and connect memories. With their beautiful motifs and historical details, they bring both atmosphere and cohesion to a collection that reflects your own personal narrative.

A great example is this arrangement featuring a Bing & Groendahl figure of Hans Christian Andersen, combined with two Christmas plates – one from 2016 and one from 1954. Both plates depict the iconic Hans Christian Andersen house in Odense, created 62 years apart, forming a cohesive theme that honors Denmark's great poet.

The possibilities are endless. Arrangements can be tailored to reflect personal stories, such as a hunting theme or items representing significant years in your life – your birth, confirmation, wedding, or your children's birth years. Whatever you choose, plates and figures can help tell a story that is entirely your own.

More than Decoration: Use Christmas Plates in Everyday Life

Christmas plates from Bing & Groendahl can be part of your unique collection and support the story you want to create. Their beautiful motifs and historical details make them a natural addition, tying the arrangement together.

For example, the plates can be arranged as part of a wall decoration, combining different years or motifs that suit the story you wish to tell. They can also be integrated into table settings, adding a festive atmosphere and emphasizing the theme, whether it’s hunting, Hans Christian Andersen, or a collection based on meaningful life events.

For an extra creative touch, the Christmas plates can be transformed into cake stands or tiered trays, where the motifs come to life as part of a functional and beautiful centerpiece. This approach allows you to create an arrangement that is both personal and practical, showcasing your themes in a new and inspiring way.
