About the item
Christmas Eve in Nyhavn from 1989 captures an atmosphere that many associate with Copenhagen in winter light: the old harbor, the closely packed rows of houses, and a historic sailing ship lying calmly at the quay under the stars. The motif combines city life, maritime traditions, and the special peace of Christmas in the classic blue Bing & Grøndahl style that has made the Christmas plates sought-after collectors' items through generations.

In this edition, it is especially the interplay between the ship and the characteristic houses in Nyhavn that makes the motif come alive. The clinker-built vessel fills the foreground with masts, rigging, and hull, while the tall facades behind create the dense, almost fairy-tale-like Copenhagen atmosphere. Small figures along the quay add life and narrative, and the bright windows as well as the dark winter sky with stars emphasize the feeling of Christmas Eve in the city.

Bing & Grøndahl's Christmas plates hold a very special place in Danish porcelain history. The series began in 1895 and was thus the world's first Christmas plate series. Since 1895, a new plate has been issued every year, and each edition was produced in a limited quantity. After the year's final firing, the mold was destroyed, so that the individual edition remains as a completed release. This is precisely why the original Christmas plates continue to attract great interest among collectors and among those who appreciate Danish design with history and soul.

This plate is designed by Edvard Jensen and is a fine choice for you if you collect Bing & Grøndahl Christmas plates, are fond of motifs from Copenhagen, or wish to pass on a piece of classic Danish porcelain. Since the edition is from 1989, it can also be used all year round as a smaller plate, for example for cake or dessert. In December, it is ideal to bring out as part of the Christmas table, where the blue motif adds an atmospheric and tradition-rich detail to the table setting.

Older porcelain such as this Christmas plate is at the same time a beautiful example of how fine craftsmanship can be given new life again and again. This makes it a sustainable choice for a home where quality, history, and personality are welcome to take up a little more space.
