Arabia Christmas plate 1991 depicts a quiet and narrative winter scene, where the Christmas mail arrives while the Christmas sheaf is being hung up in the garden. The motif brings together several well-known Nordic Christmas traditions in one picture: the snow-covered farm, the awaited mail and the sheaves of grain for winter's birds. This gives this Finnish Christmas plate a warm and everyday atmosphere, where Christmas is not only decoration, but also care, rhythm and life around the home.

On this edition from Arabia Finland, a house can be seen with heavy snow on the roof, a small wreath on the door and dark fir trees in the background. In front of the house, the postman stands by the mailbox, while a woman ties or hangs up the Christmas sheaf by a tree. Next to her stands a child, and a sled lies ready in the snow. The small details bring the motif to life and tell of a winter day when the preparations for Christmas take place outside in the cold, but with the security of the home as the clear focal point.

The 1991 edition is designed by Tove Slotte, who was behind the Arabia Christmas plates from 1990 to 2002. Her line is easily recognizable in the calm composition, the fine blue shades and the simple, narrative pictorial world. The hand-painted gold decoration can be seen along the edge and in the year at the bottom, where it creates a beautiful contrast to the cool winter motif and the plate's light stoneware.

Arabia is Finland's most recognized porcelain factory, and the series of Arabia Christmas plates belongs among the classic Finnish collector's plates. This Christmas plate is made of stoneware, which gives a robust and solid body. With a diameter of 23 cm, it is not only decorative, but also useful as, for example, a lunch plate during Christmastime or as an atmospheric part of the table setting in the winter months. As the edition is from 1991, it also has holes on the back for hanging and can therefore easily be used as wall decoration.

Our specimen comes from an old remaining stock of Arabia Christmas plates and is unused. This makes this older plate a fine choice for those who appreciate original Finnish design with history and would like to bring classic applied art further into a contemporary home.
