Arabia Christmas plate 1983 with winter landscape and church

The Arabia Christmas plate 1983 depicts a vivid winter landscape, where a village lies still under the snow, while everyday life continues among farms, trees and church. At the top of the motif, the church rises on the hill with a snow-covered roof, surrounded by dark firs and bare winter trees, and over the landscape a golden winter sun shines. The simple blue colour scale gives this Finnish Christmas plate a calm, Nordic expression, while the small golden details in windows, sun and year add warmth to the scene.

The longer one looks at the motif, the more narrative details emerge. On the slope, small figures can be seen making their way through the snow, and further down in the village there is activity by the houses: one person carries buckets, another works by the clothesline, and toward the right a horse with sleigh comes through the winter landscape. This makes the 1983 edition more than a traditional Christmas plate with snowy landscape and church in the background. Here there is also a story of community, work and everyday life in the Nordic winter.

This Arabia Christmas plate is designed by Raija Uosikkinen, who was behind the editions from the series' first period. 1983 thus belongs among the early Arabia Christmas plates from the classic Finnish series, which began in 1978. Arabia Finland is known for strong design and applied art with lasting quality, and here the tradition-rich Christmas plate is combined with a motif that feels both timeless and rooted in place.

The plate is made of stoneware (stoneware), which gives a robust and substantial body. It can therefore not only be hung up as wall decoration, but also used as a plate, for example for lunch or serving at Christmas time. The hand-painted gold decoration along the edge and in selected details creates a fine contrast to the matte, blue-white motif.

Our example comes from an old remaining stock of older Arabia Christmas plates and is unused.
