About the item
Christmas in the old town from 1983 captures an atmosphere that many associate with a classic Danish Christmas: quiet winter evenings, soft snowfall and the warm glow from an old street lamp. On this Bing & Grøndahl Christmas plate, the peace and poetry of the historic town are told in the characteristic blue shades of the porcelain, where light and shadow create depth in the snow-covered motif.

The plate was designed by Edvard Jensen, and the motif gathers several fine details in a simple, atmosphere-filled composition. The old lantern stands centrally with snow on top, while two small birds sit close by the lamp's arm. To the left, branches weighed down by snow can be seen, and in the background half-timbering and roofs are discernible, emphasizing the feeling of an older Danish town center. The star in the sky adds a discreet Christmas touch to the motif and gives the scene an almost fairy-tale expression.

It is precisely the combination of the old town, the winter darkness and the lamp's light that makes this edition special. Christmas in the old town is not about bustle, but about presence, silence and the small moments that characterize the best moods of Christmas. It is a plate that appeals both to collectors and to those who are fond of traditional Danish Christmas porcelain with story and character.

Bing & Grøndahl's Christmas plate series began in 1895 and was thus the world's first Christmas plate series. Since 1895, a new plate has been released every year, and each edition constitutes its own completed release. After the year's final firing, the mold was destroyed, so that the specific edition could not later be put into production again. This is part of the explanation for why the individual Christmas plates still arouse interest among both collectors and those who wish to bring older quality design into the home.

As this Christmas plate is from 1983, it can not only be hung up as December decoration, but also used as a smaller plate all year round. At Christmas it is ideal for cake or a small dessert, while the rest of the year it adds a touch of Danish design history to the table. Older porcelain like this is at the same time a beautiful and sustainable way to give good craftsmanship new life in a modern home.
