About the item
Bing & Grøndahl Christmas plate 1934 with the motif Church Bell in Tower captures one of Christmas' most solemn moments. Here we are lifted up into the church's tower room, where the bell-ringer stands in the midst of the movement and pulls the rope, while the large bell swings above him. It is a scene with both power and stillness at the same time - as if the sound of Christmas Eve already fills the air, even in the quiet blue-and-white porcelain.
On the plate, the heavy tower beams, the lantern on the floor and the tall round-arched window with the night sky outside can be seen. The visible stars emphasize the special atmosphere, and together with the inscription JULE-AFTEN 1934, the motif becomes a story of tradition, anticipation and the moment when Christmas' message is called out over the town. Church bells have for centuries been used to mark holidays, and here precisely the ringing becomes a symbol of community and the Danish Christmas Eve.
The year plate was designed by Immanuel Tjerne and belongs to the famous series of Bing & Grøndahl Christmas plates, which began in 1895 as the world's first Christmas plate series. Since then, a new plate has been issued every year. Each year plate was produced in a limited number, and after the year's final firing, the mold was destroyed, so this very edition remained a completed production. This is an important part of the explanation for why the individual year plates continue to attract great interest among collectors.
As this Christmas plate is from 1934, it can also be used as a small plate and does not need to come out only in December. It is lovely for, for example, cake in the winter months, but looks just as beautiful on the wall the rest of the year, where the classic blue motif adds history, Danish design and a calm Christmas atmosphere to the home. An older Christmas plate like this is at the same time a sustainable choice - a piece of quality porcelain created to last and to be appreciated again in new homes.
